Pinterest Facebook Twitter Email By: Kate Parham Kordsmeier Related To: Hotels and Lodging Travel's Best Welcome to the New South. We’re rounding up Atlanta hotels with Southern hospitality, rooftop infinity pools, postcard-worthy skyline views and beaucoup de charm. Some offer unparalleled access to the über-ritzy shopping district of Buckhead; others give guests curbside entry to the city’s top tourist attractions (did someone say Georgia Aquarium?). Wherever you choose, an unforgettable adventure awaits. 10. The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C Neighborhood: Buckhead Starting Rate: $229/night Highlights: Though each of the 510 guest rooms at this 30-year-old hotel is beautiful, it’s worth it to upgrade to the exclusive Spa Level, where you’ll find a personal spa concierge, relaxation lounge, convenient access to the spa and in-room amenities such as spa-inspired snacks, Tempur-Pedic mattresses and yoga mats, anytime check-out, sound machines and eco-friendly bamboo bath accessories. Best For: Shopaholics. With both Lenox Square mall and Phipps Plaza just across the street from the hotel, the Ritz is the perfect place for retail enthusiasts. Don’t Miss: Though afternoon tea and live jazz in the Lobby Lounge are favorites, the Sunday brunch and bubble bar is a standout — more than 100 desserts anchor the festive meal, which is rounded out with a Champagne cocktail from the interactive bubble bar. 9. The Georgian Terrace Hotel Neighborhood: Midtown Starting Rate: $100/night Highlights: Affordable luxury is the name of the game at this historic icon, where elegant crystal chandeliers, white marble columns and floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly complement the modern and vibrant Proof & Provision, the hotel’s lively watering hole. Best For: History buffs. The hotel, which opened in 1911, has played host to President Calvin Coolidge, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Tallulah Bankhead, not to mention the premiere gala for Gone With the Wind in 1939. Don’t Miss: A show at the fabulous Fox Theatre, which is directly across the street from the hotel. 8. W Atlanta Downtown Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Neighborhood: Downtown Starting Rate: $200/night Highlights: The sleek and modern hotel may be in the heart of downtown, but inside, you’ll find a verdant sanctuary ready to pamper you, whether you opt for cocktails in the “Living Room,” an indulgent steak dinner at BLT Steak (go for the truffle mac & cheese!) or a massage at the beloved Bliss Spa. Best For: Scenesters. The hip vibe of this hotel makes it a true place to see and be seen for trendy visitors and posh locals alike. Don’t Miss: The rooftop, home to the city’s only hotel helipad, a swanky wet bar and a gorgeous all-weather infinity pool, complete with panoramic city views and live DJs on the weekends. 7. Hyatt Regency Atlanta Hyatt Regency Atlanta Neighborhood: Downtown Starting Rate: $179/night Highlights: One of Atlanta’s oldest hotels just got a $65 million makeover. Expect a refresh of the hotel’s soaring 22-story atrium lobby, energy-efficient rooms outfitted with the latest technology and an expanded club level. Best For: Business travelers. With more than 180,000 square feet of meeting, boardroom and exhibit space (including the largest hotel ballroom in the state), the hotel has plenty of options for conferences and on-the-go meetings. Don’t Miss: Polaris, the hotel’s signature rooftop restaurant (you’ll likely recognize the iconic blue dome), which is a city landmark in its own right — it was Atlanta’s first rotating restaurant when it opened in 1967. 6. Mandarin Oriental Atlanta Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group Neighborhood: Buckhead Starting Rate: $435/night Highlights: Southern hospitality meets Asian charm at this contemporary stunner. Superlative service (expect to be greeted with hot towels and tea) is delivered around every corner, from the elegant Taipan lounge featuring live jazz to the pet-friendly and luxuriant English gardens. Best For: Couples and groups. The spa and the hotel’s proximity to Buckhead’s incredible shopping make it a no-brainer for romantic getaways or girls’ weekends. Don’t Miss: This ultra-luxe hotel is home to the largest hotel spa in the city, a 2-story retreat with 13 treatment rooms (including a VIP couple’s suite), a 60-foot indoor lap pool, plus sauna, steam room, vitality pools and a charming terrace. 5. Four Seasons Atlanta Christian Horan Neighborhood: Midtown Starting Rate: $240/night Highlights: While most of Atlanta’s high-end hotels are found in Buckhead, travelers looking for a more central luxury experience will revel in the Four Seasons, which is walking distance from notable city landmarks, including Piedmont Park and the High Museum of Art. Best For: Luxury seekers. The 5-star, 5-diamond hotel has a level of service and sophistication that is unmatched. Don’t Miss: The fifth-floor apiary, where more than 500 pounds of honey have been produced for use in the restaurant, Park 75, and spa. 4. Loews Atlanta Hotel Loews Atlanta Hotel Neighborhood: Midtown Starting Rate: $159/night Highlights: The newest hotel in Midtown is not only walking distance to the city’s top attractions, but it also boasts a modern Southern-meets-French restaurant, Eleven, and is revered for its exemplary service. Best For: Business travelers. There’s free in-room Wi-Fi and more than 40,000 square feet of flexible meeting space (more than any other Midtown hotel), plus a 4,800-square-foot terrace with views overlooking the city. Don’t Miss: Exhale, one of the largest spa and fitness centers in town (20,000 square feet, including 9,000 square feet of gym space), is free for hotel guests. There’s even a sauna, the only hammam room in Georgia, and yoga, barre and core classes. 3. St. Regis Atlanta Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Neighborhood: Buckhead Starting Rate: $650/night Highlights: The St. Regis’ signature butler service is just the tip of the iceberg at this AAA 5-diamond property, which is also home to one of the few outdoor hotel pools in town — in a 40,000-square-foot piazza with waterfalls, cabanas and poolside service, no less. (Hint: In the cooler months, the piazza is transformed into a magical ice-skating rink.) Best For: Foodies. Not only is local restaurateur Gerry Klaskala opening a restaurant inside the hotel, but the property is situated in a courtyard housing some of Atlanta’s best restaurants, including Umi Sushi and Ford Fry’s King + Duke. Don’t Miss: Afternoon tea, which is hosted daily from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Expect nearly a dozen teas alongside beautiful towers piled high with savory petite sandwiches, freshly baked scones, pastries and petit fours. 2. Artmore Hotel Neighborhood: Midtown Starting Rate: $155/night Highlights: One of Atlanta’s only boutique hotels, the Artmore, which is located in the city’s cultural arts district, is full of unique details, such as a cozy cocktail garden, historical architecture and Old Hollywood décor. Best For: Families. The hotel is one of the few in town to offer 2-bedroom and loft suites, complete with in-room kitchens. Don’t Miss: The “Bark” More package at this pet-friendly hotel, which includes a doggie treat package and custom bedding for Fido. 1. Omni Hotel at CNN Center Omni Hotels Neighborhood: Downtown Starting Rate: $159/night Highlights: The 4-diamond hotel’s location can’t be beat — not only is it located within CNN’s world headquarters, it’s also adjacent to Philips Arena and the Georgia World Congress Center. As of October 2014, it is attached to the brand-new College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience as well. Best For: Sightseers. The hotel is in the heart of the city’s top tourist attractions, walking distance from the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Dome. Don’t Miss: The outstanding views of Centennial Olympic Park and the Fountain of Rings from the hotel’s Prime Meridian restaurant. We’ve listed the TOP 10 TripAdvisor-rated Halifax hotels, along with some AMAZING reviews that’ll have you packing your bags and booking your suite! Read on for Halifax’s TOP 10 TripAdvisor-rated Hotels: 10 – Best Western Plus Chocolate Lake Hotel 20 St. Margaret’s Bay Road – West End Halifax “The Staff are AMAZING**Do yourself a favor and BOOK HERE!!!!! My wife and children stayed at this hotel while I was in hospital having surgery…  Let me just say this, THE STAFF ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! … They treat you like a friend and always interested in what is going on with you. When the staff found out that I was being discharged from the hospital and we had decided to stay the night instead of travel home, they all came together to start making arrangements for my arrival back to my families room… It truly was moving and appreciated to have them do so much and offer so much. They even offered to send someone to pick me up at the hospital and have someone look after my bags and assist me getting into the room.” Read the full review. Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler Eagar77 from Kentville, Canada on September 23, 2016 Best Western Plus Chocolate Lake Hotel Review The Best Western Plus  Chocolate Lake on TripAdvisor! 9 – Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel 1919 Upper Water Street – Downtown Halifax “This hotel should be 10 stars! My husband and i stayed here to celebrate his 60th birthday. We could not have been more happy about this choice. The staff were the most cohesive and friendly we have ever encountered. They seemed to genuinely care, from the front desk to the kilted valets to the servers -everyone was outstanding and kind. We were so impressed that our hard-working room attendant, Micaela, took the time to write a note with her good wishes for a happy birthday in Halifax on seeing my husband’s birthday cards, which was so thoughtful! The spectacular views and local attractions, coupled with such a warm, grand (the building was converted from a casino) and excellent hotel made this a truly memorable stay and we would return in a heartbeat!” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler mkfl00d from Toronto, Canada on August 27, 2016 Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Review The Harbourfront Marriott on TripAdvisor! 8 – The Halliburton 5184 Morris Street – Downtown Halifax “30th Wedding Anniversary Celebration! We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary staying at the Halliburton and we were not disappointed! The room was an adequate size, spotless. A lovely courtyard at the back to sit of an evening and sample the Halliburton’s cocktails! Lots to choose at breakfast, but what made it so special for us was that the staff were so friendly, helpful and very hard working, loved the attention to detail, right down to the bottle of champagne left in our room for our anniversary! If we are fortunate to return to Halifax, the Halliburton would be first on our list to book!“ Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler Roslyn P from Glasgow, United Kingdom on January 4, 2018 Halliburton Inn Review The Halliburton on TripAdvisor! 7 – Hampton Inn by Hilton Halifax Downtown 1960 Brunswick Street – Downtown Halifax “Very nice We arrived at 3:30 am and we treated like royalty by Richard. Very helpful. Even gave us the number of a restaurant that delivers until 5 am! Our room was spotless and had a beautiful view of the harbor. Breakfast was usual Hampton Inn but the area was clean which is difficult to maintain with as many people as were there. Great place to stay downtown. Within walking distance to the Citadel, Scotia Arena, and lots of great places to eat.” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler Betsy H on July 5, 2017 Review The Hampton Inn on TripAdvisor! 6 – Cambridge Suites – Halifax 1583 Brunswick Street – Downtown Halifax “Care and compassion We were in the city for our son’s surgery and had to get up earlier to go to the hospital. Your front staff provided us with a lovely bagged breakfast. Then when later it turned out that we unexpectedly had to stay at the hospital overnight your front desk staff was so kind and concerned and assisted us with cancelling our second night. We will definitely be back!” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler J6016KGaprilb on December 25, 2017 Cambridge Suites Review The Cambridge Suites on TripAdvisor! 5 – Courtyard Halifax Downtown 5120 Salter Street – Downtown Halifax “Perfect Our stay at the Courtyard was simply perfect. Great location right at the waterfront, views on the bay, big, clean, comfortable room. Service was simply outstanding. Not only the friendliness and courtesy of all staff, but also prompt service. As Marriott Rewards member we got a personal handwritten message upon our arrival with vouchers for two free drinks, and complimentary parking. I never felt treated as well in bigger, more upscale hotels.” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler vate69 from Manlius, New York on July 7, 2017 Courtyard by Marriott Halifax Downtown Review The Courtyard on TripAdvisor! 4 – Prince George Hotel 1725 Market Street – Downtown  Halifax “A Prince of a Hotel We were greeted warmly, staff arranged adjoining rooms for us for an early check in. While waiting we enjoyed a drink in the Level Bar. We had a few requests for the room and all were honoured professionally and quickly. All in all a very pleasant and comfortable experience. We were treated royally!!” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler laureenpm from Antigonish, Canada on December 5, 2017 Prince George Hotel Review The Prince George on TripAdvisor! 3 – The Hollis Halifax – a DoubleTree Suites by Hilton 1649 Hollis Street – Downtown Halifax “Beautiful Hotel and Centrally Located Our stay was wonderful! The hotel is beautiful, and our room left nothing to be desired. We had a gorgeous view of the harbor, and enjoyed waking up to that scene every morning we were there. It was definitely worth the extra money to book a room with a harbor view. We were especially grateful for the staff who were always helpful, courteous, considerate and very knowledgeable. Of particular mention is Yaro, the valet who always ran, not walked, to retrieve our car for us timely, and Trevor, who is the concierge who always steered us to places we enjoyed visiting and restaurants where we enjoyed the food at reasonable prices.” Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler akajoanie from Moorpark, California on November 3, 2017 The Hollis Halifax Review The Hollis on TripAdvisor! 2 – Homewood Suites by Hilton Halifax-Downtown 1960 Brunswick Street – Downtown Halifax “Puts all other hotels to shame! We stayed for only one night on our way through the maritimes and we did NOT want to leave! …  The dining room staff are also the hardest working people I’ve ever seen! Truly the best hotel we stayed at during our trip thru Quebec and Maritimes, and so well located at the foot of La Citadel and a short walk downhill to Lower Water Street, you will not need to use your car to tour downtown!” Read the full review. Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler Kayakmom2015 from New Westminster, Canada on August 23, 2017 Homewood Suites by Hilton Halifax Downtown Review Homewood Suites on TripAdvisor! 1 – Comfort Hotel Bayer’s Lake 88 Chain Lake Drive – Halifax “Exceptional Hospitality We recently had a 2 week stay at the Comfort Hotel Bayer’s Lake while visiting family in Halifax. Right from the initial conversation we had with Nimfa, the GM, regarding long stay pricing our impression of this hotel was positive and never disappointing. We were warmly and enthusiastically greeted by Jessica at the front desk when we arrived. All of our interactions with staff found them going above and beyond to provide friendly and efficient service. Aimee, in the breakfast room greeted us warmly each morning… Nimfa oversees the hotel with a warm and welcoming approach, even making rounds in the breakfast room to speak with all the guests one morning. We were gifted with free carrot cake and bottled water in our room one evening and on Christmas Eve we returned to our room to find chocolates and a handwritten Holiday Greeting. Our experience surpassed any that we have had at any hotel previously. It is clear why this establishment is rated #1. We will absolutely stay at the Comfort Hotel next time we are in Halifax.” Read the full review. Reviewed by TripAdvisor Traveler KathleenS2000 from Melfort on December 30, 2017 Comfort Hotel Bayer’s Lake Review the Comfort Hotel on TripAdvisor! Top 10 Best Hotels in Hammamet

Hotels Destinations Travel Ideas Culture & Entertainment Top 10 Best Hotels in Hammamet Home Hotels Top 10 Best Hotels in Hammamet Top 10 Best Hotels in Hammamet Please Like: 0 Pin it Email There’s little doubt that Hammamet is one of the most popular destinations for tourism in Tunisia and whether you are looking for beaches, culture or water sports it has it all. One could spend an age penning all of the things to do in Hammamet; while it has always had immense history behind it, it now well and truly caters to tourists. Bearing the above in mind, you probably won’t be surprised to read that there are many hotels available to stay in. We’ll now take a look at the best ten in the area to help you along your way. To get more details on each of these hotels and check out pricing and availability, please click here.   Hotel Diar Lemdina As you’ll find through our guide, there’s no such thing as an “average” hotel in Hammamet. Competition is fierce for all of the tourists that frequent the area and as such, each hotel has to have something special to entice you. With Hotel Diar Lemdina appearing at the top of our list, it goes without saying that there are plenty of special features here. From the moment you step inside the establishment you’ll find the whole architecture and feel is just extravagant – it feels more like a palace. The beach is quite literally on the doorstep, the rooms are spacious and to top it all off – you’ll struggle to find a better animations team. They really do make the effort to make your stay memorable, as is the case with all of the staff who work at Hotel Diar Lemdina.   Sentido Phenicia Fortunately, the standard doesn’t drop as we move onto our next pick; Sentido Phenicia. This is again surrounded in luxury and one glimpse of the pool will highlight why. It’s not a standard, rectangular resort pool – it’s curved, surrounded by rocks, palm trees and everything else that defines luxury. There’s more to life than the pool, though. There is also a golf course on the grounds, while the sea is again just a short distance away. Just like the previous hotel we looked at, the animations team should be given a special mention here. They are constantly vying for the attention of guests and whether its football, darts or even salsa – there are more than enough activities to satisfy everyone.   The Orangers Beach Resort Bungalows Set in the palm trees, the Orangers Beach Resort is another classic in Hammamet. While the pool may not be quite as creative as the previous hotel, it’s still carved into the building which again means that it stands out from most that you will have been to. Additionally, there is plenty of sun loungers available on the pleasant decking – allowing you to completely relax and catch the sun with ease. Food and drink is served all-day, every day and is lauded by previous guests. A lot of rooms have a sea view as well, which can just complete the “picturesque” experience that this resort provides.   Iberostar Averroes We’ve already spoken about swimming pools which aren’t of the standard size and shape and as soon as you set foot in Iberostar Averroes, you’ll see another that’s worthy of some sort of award. There are countless pools available in this resort and the variety means that its ideal for families. In fact, the whole vibe of Iberostar Averroes is one of sophistication. The rooms boast deco which just seems to be completely above hotel standard, while even the chefs appear to go the extra mile with their presentation of the food. All in all, this is one of the best hotels in the area. The fact it is also situated next to the beach just adds to the charm.   La Badira Based near the Medina, it would be fair to say that La Badira certainly has the “location, location, location” factor. As well as the above, it also happens to be utterly luxurious. It’s for this reason that it tends to attract a lot of couples on their honeymoon, or others looking for romance, with touches such as the infinity pools being a main reason behind this. All of the suites are decked out fantastically, with some even boasting their own hot tubs. The staff are also highly attentive and will service your every need without question.   Hammamet Garden Resort & Spa If you’re looking for a hotel just based on its pool, you won’t go far wrong with the Hammamet Garden Resort & Spa. The outdoor pool is absolutely gigantic and is surrounded by accommodation that is renowned for its beauty and cleanliness. As well as the pool, the resort basks in picturesque gardens, while all of the out-buildings such as pool-side bars have thatched roofs. When you also consider the fact that the staff are exceptionally helpful, friendly and will do anything to enhance your stay, it comes as no surprise to see Hammamet Garden Resort & Spa as one of the favorites in the region.   Tui Magic Life Africana As you would expect from any hotel donning one of the big hotel brands, the Tui Magic Life Africana offers guests aplenty. It’s probably one of the more modern establishments in the region, while yet again the outdoor areas are out of this world. The pools are surrounded by palm trees and rocks, while the gardens are impeccably maintained. With the majority of guests also quick to praise the food on offer, this is another resort that should unquestionably be considered if you are staying in the Hammamet region.   Hotel Palace Oceana Hammamet Any hotel which uses the word “palace” in its name has plenty to live up to, but it appears as though this establishment has ticked all of the boxes and is another must-see in Hammamet. The service at this hotel is one of the best around and as soon as your drink is empty, it’ll be topped up and you’ll barely notice. As well as the small touches like that, the overall architecture is hugely impressive and you’ll be taken aback by the towering reception. It boasts fantastic sea views, plenty of places to sit and sunbathes as well as a large outdoor pool. It’s suitable for pretty much everyone.   Holiday Village Manar Holiday Village Manar is one of the few resorts which will be suitable whatever the weather – with the indoor pool and spa providing plenty of versatility to this establishment. However, let’s also give a mention to the outdoor pool. To say this is perfect for families would be an understatement; it has countless slides and is more like a water park than a standard hotel swimming pool. While most guests won’t be able to wrench themselves away from the pool, there is also a beach on the boundary which again adds the family-factor to Holiday Village Manar. With a terrific set of staff, and one of the most vibrant animation teams around, we really couldn’t recommend this resort enough.   Medina Solaria & Thalasso We’ve just spoken about impressive pools for the previous hotel, but Medina Solaria & Thalasso also has its own set. The outdoor pool at this hotel is more like an ocean and swirls around rocks, trees and other foliage that makes it perfect to explore. The whole resort can be described as premium, clean and just oozes sophistication. There is also plenty to do through the day and evening, with the animations team arranging music, darts and a whole host of other activities. Pictures are courtsey of Tripadvisor and expedia. To get more details on each of these hotels and check out pricing and availability, please click here.   About the Author Latest Articles About Olivia Marsh Olivia Marsh - Author - Professional chef and Travel enthusiast. Maldives Hotels & Resorts

My Trip Maldives Maldives Hotels & Resorts Where to Stay in Maldives Hotels Flights Flight + Hotel Things to Do Going to Check in Check out Search Elsewhere in the world, you are what you wear. But in the Maldives, where clothing is often kept to a minimum, a better adage would be: you are where you stay. All the Maldives resorts are self-contained. Everything needed is brought in from the outside world, and in the vast majority of cases there is nothing on the island apart from the resort. As a result, rates will most often include all meals, or at least half board. Prices can vary wildly, depending on the type and design of facilities. Obviously top properties like Four Seasons and One & Only are going to command a greater financial outlay, one that most guests would agree is more than worth it. But note that at more economically priced properties, the sun, sand and sea are pretty much the same as at the high-end ones. One major factor in choosing a resort is its distance from the airport, and from local attractions. Until Gan International Airport lives up to its name, visitors from abroad will continue to have to use Malé as their entry and exit point. Dedicated divers who will want to cruise around the top sites are advised to pick a resort within striking distance. The same goes for surfers. The hotels in Malé are in no way a match for the resorts on the outlying islands, and there are very few reasons to stay overnight in the capital. But it's best to be well informed of your destination before winging off into the unknown so have a read through our quick guide to the Maldives to make sure you know exactly what is waiting for you in this lovely part of the world. However, there are times of year that are sunnier than others. High season runs from December to April, neatly capturing the Christmas and New Year markets. Expect resort rates to rise accordingly. Rain and cloudy skies are more likely between May and November. However, August often sees higher prices as Italians flock here during their traditional vacation month. For divers, visibility is better on the western side of an atoll from May to November, and on the eastern side for the remaining five months. And the surf's up between March and October. Year-round, the thermometer hovers at about 30°C. Add to Trip! 16 Electricity Voltage is 230 Volts, AC is 50 Hz and the outlets are the large version of the British three-pin BS-546 plugs. Add to Trip! 9 Getting Around Island Aviation Services operates domestic flights between Malé and the islands of Kaadedhdhoo, Kadhdhoo, Gan and Hanimaadhoo. A number of companies (notably Maldivian Air Taxi and Trans Maldivian Airways) operate seaplanes and/or helicopter services around the Maldives to reach those destinations not covered by Island Aviation Services. To explore closer to home, walking is often best as most islands can be crossed on foot in half an hour. Malé is the exception, with taxis readily available, and bicycles are a good option on Addu Atoll, where several islands are linked by a causeway. Add to Trip! 21 Getting There There are regular flights between the Maldives and Colombo (Sri Lanka), Thrivandrum (Southwest India), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), as well as numerous charter flights from many major Asian and European cities. The international airport is on Hulule Island, two kilometres from the capital, Malé. Scheduled boat transfers (journey time 15 minutes) run between the airport and Malé. With its picture-postcard backdrops, it should come as no surprise that the Maldives is a popular stopover for many cruise ships, despite the fact that cruising permits are expensive. Add to Trip! 6 Holidays and Festivals January 1 New Year's Day January* Islamic New Year March* Mawlid al-Nabi (Birth of the Prophet) April* The Day the Maldives Embraced Islam April 27 National Day July 26-27 Independence Day September* Ramadan begins October* Eid al-Fitr (Ramadan ends) November 3 Victory Day November 11 Republic Day December* Hajj Day December* Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) *Dates of these Muslim festivals vary from year to year as they depend on various phases of the moon. Maldivians are very proud of their country and deck homes and streets with red-and-green national flags on almost every holiday. Festivals are definitely for the whole family and men, women and children share in the food preparation, decoration and - a vital component of every Maldivian festival - the parade. Celebrations are a blend of traditional and modern elements, so Bandiya Jehun (the traditional beating of metallic water pots to the tune of an accompanying song) or the reciting of Raivaru, a form of poetry sung in a slow, even tune, may easily be followed by a modern jazz number. During the lunar month of Ramadan that precedes Eid al-Fitr, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night, so normal business patterns may be interrupted. Many restaurants are closed during the day. Some disruption may continue into Eid al-Fitr itself, although this is generally unlikely to affect life on the resort islands. Eid al-Fitr may last anything from two to ten days, depending on the region. Add to Trip! 9 Important Facts (visas, voltage) and Phone Numbers A passport and return ticket are the only items really required to qualify for entry into the Maldives. A no-cost 30-day visa is issued on arrival. This can be extended up to 90 days when backed by proof of sufficient funds for that heavenly resort stay, or by a letter from a sponsor. Alcohol may not be imported, and is not found anywhere outside the resorts. Naturally, drugs, pornography and similar items are strictly prohibited. The export of tortoises and turtles, products made of turtle shells or black coral in whole form is prohibited. The International Code is 960. There are no area codes in the Maldives. Emergency Numbers: Police: 119 Fire: 118 Ambulance: 102 ADK Hospital 313553 Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital 336658 Add to Trip! 1 Island Hopping Not a problem, as local charter boats known as dhonis (traditional all-purpose vessels powered by a diesel engine) can be hired with ease from the ferry counter at each resort and can take visitors to island communities close to resort islands. To travel to the outer islands which are beyond the tourist zone, an Inter-Atoll Travel Permit is required; permits can only be issued to those visitors who are sponsored by a resident of the island they wish to visit. Add to Trip! 20 Money Matters The Maldivian currency is the Rufiya, which is divided into 100 Larees. The Rufiya is pegged at 12.8 to the US dollar. There are no restrictions on changing any currency into Rufiya but Rufiya may be spent only in Malé, where traders are perfectly happy in any case to accept US dollars. Hotel and travel expenses are billed in US dollars. This is the preferred currency for the resorts although they also accept credit cards and cash or travellers cheques in all major currencies - but not Rufiya. ATMs are still relatively rare in the Maldives and there are none outside Malé. The best place to look for them is outside the major banks on Boduthakurufaanu Magu. Cash advances on credit cards can also be obtained over the counter at Male airport. Add to Trip! 10 Transfers to Resorts It's straight from the plane onto the boat (or seaplane/helicopter) for most passengers; dhonis from most of the island resorts meet each arriving plane to take guests to their hotel and handle all onward transport arrangements, provided that an advance hotel booking has been made. If it has not, head for the ferry counter near the jetty area at the airport where speedboats are available for hire to take visitors to Ari Atoll and other outlying islands. At a whopping 150 metres long and 57 storeys high, it is both the highest and the largest infinity pool in the whole world – and probably the most photographed, too. When the hotel first opened in 2010, the pool was open to the public (for a fee). Since then, probably due to overcrowding, the iconic pool is now reserved for hotel guests only. However, this huge three-pronged building overlooking the harbour has much more to offer if you don’t have a room for the night, including their glamorous KU DE TA rooftop bar, an observation deck, a casino and a shopping mall on the ground. Take a dip after dark, and you’ll see the city lit up in spectacular fashion, with the glowing Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the Bay and CBD skyline all in sight from the pool’s infinity edge. The sophisticated rich brown decking by the pool also makes a great place to sunbath during the day, or take a cocktail at night. Located just a short walk from Bugis MRT and close to Beach Road, the south-facing pool also looks out to sea and, on a clear day, you’ll be able to spot the Indonesian islands in the distance, as well as all the giant cargo ships dotted around the busy Singapore harbour. You can watch the planes taking off from the water and also admire the airport’s control tower, which can be seen from the pool area. The long stretch of pool is fringed by tropical palm trees, making this Crowne Plaza feel a lot less stuffy than your traditional airport hotel. The large four-star hotel is actually connected to Changi Airport, making is the obvious choice for visitors in transit, or those needing to access the airport late at night or early in the morning. Elsewhere, you’ll also find the stylish Bar 75 and the Imperial Treasure restaurant that has a buffet of international-style cuisine along with a Cantonese-style menu. The surrounding gardens, green hills and tropical palm trees will all take you back to a time when Singapore was an undeveloped dot of land on the Malaysian Peninsular, rather than the sprawling metropolis that it is now.
